It was reassuring to believe that Touche would someday return, and good to have an older sister to dry her tears and bring a smile back to Lori’s face. Especially because, by 1966, it was clear that the portrait of the perfect family was a fraud.

As her ten-year marriage fell apart, Diane Keidel, a petite 34-year-old brunette, carried on a series of affairs with other men. These included men from the job site where Gene worked. He learned he was the cuckold when he overheard his fellow workers laughing about it. Salt was rubbed into the wounds when his wife became pregnant and had an abortion—after he had had a vasectomy.

The couple separated, and Gene moved in with his father. He was seeing another woman but remained jealous of his wife and her lovers. He was also angry that Diane had the house and wanted the kids. She filed for divorce, and on September 16 went to talk to her lawyer about what was shaping up into an ugly custody battle.

That evening, she met with Gene and they took the kids out for something to eat while the two adults talked in a bar next door. Sometime later, after midnight but before dawn on September 17, 1966, Diane and Gene Keidel were at it again in the home on West Citrus Way. Yelling. Name-calling. He pushed her.

Unknown to both, they were being watched by Lori, who had been awakened by the commotion. She peeked in to see what her parents were doing in the dining room, near the sliding glass door that led to the backyard. She noticed that her mother was wearing a dark-blue dress that she thought of as the “coat dress” because of its tailoring and half-inch-wide metal buttons down the front.

Lori’s father was screaming bad words. Then he hit her mother, who fell back against the glass door before collapsing to the floor, where she lay still.

Frightened, Lori returned to her bed. There in the dark, she lay listening to the sound of someone digging in the backyard.
